Fantastic Fest Day One Recap
Fantastic Fest has begun in spectacular fashion with the US Premiere of David Gordon Green’s Halloween. A thorough review will be posted within the week, but rest assured in knowing that the movie rules. Jamie Lee Curtis and crew deliver the goods.
My second film of the day was Luz, a student thesis film that was good enough to secure distribution. The film follows a police interrogation of a woman who may be possessed. Luz has great sound design and a moody atmosphere.
The final film of the night for me was The Perfection, a stylistic DePalma-esque tale of seduction and abuse that will keep you guessing. Allison Willians of Girls game shines in the film.
In addition to all the great films Fantastic Fest has to offer on its first day, the festival’s closing Halloween party was a blast. From oddities to a candy buffet and insane costumes, festival goers that attended the party were in for a treat. I noticed a number of costumes from Nicholas Cage’s recent release Mandy, so I would not be surprised to see this costume as a big deal on October 31st.
