Movie Review: TRANSFORMERS - THE LAST KNIGHT is an Incoherent Mess
Let's get this out of the way: if you are a fan of the Transformers franchise and you have enjoyed each sequel, then you will likely be entertained by Transformers: The Last Knight. For everybody else, this movie will absolutely not change your mind.
The film starts with Transformers interacting with King Arthur and Merlin is a drunken fraud whose powers come from Transformer tech. Merlin's scenes are supposed to be funny but they are odd. The film then cuts to present day and you have to have a doctorate degree in Transformers lore to remember all the events that have previously transpired in the series along with who all the characters are in order to appreciate Transformers: The Last Knight.
The plot makes zero sense and Michael Bay continues to assault the audience's senses with stunning (yet incoherent) special effects and hyperactive editing that makes it difficult to understand the action in any given scene. But these are complaints lodged at all the Transformers films. I will say I enjoyed the first film in the franchise, but this was just more of the same: annoying characters, sexist, weird humor, and over-complicated plotting stretched out to nearly 3 hours. Anthony Hopkins clearly accepted this role for the paycheck, and it is incredibly odd to hear him utter such phrases as "bitchin' ride" and calling Marky Mark "dude".
The movie sets up more films for the franchise, and there is a Bumblebee spinoff coming for those of you that enjoy this stuff. Personally, I'd rather be forced to watch Barney reruns than get stuck with this again.
