Respect Deserved for The Program
The Program is a film that deserves more good attention than it receives. The main thing anyone remembers about The Program is a story of a bunch of idiots who imitated a now long lost scene and one of them having been run over. The Program may not be the greatest written or even have the best actors but the one thing the movie does have is that it does not shy away from real life situations. At the time of its release there was no social media or no real internet. Sports scandals were broken by newspaper writers many of which could be swayed to shy away from such items.
The Program dove right into issues which have been in the spotlight over the past decade. As you rewatch this classic in my eyes think about the real life situations that have occurred and give a rated R movie made by Disney, yes I said Disney, more respect than it has ever received. A few examples are listed below. Just think to yourself as you re-watch, was this movie released ahead of its time?
Star Player Coverups: Lattimer from the Program having a sex scandal covered up by the university almost identical to that of the Baylor scandal.
Money received under the table: Many of the players in the film received handouts from the boosters of the university similar to SMU or even USC of recent years.
This will be a film I will watch with my son when his time comes to enjoy grown up movies to discuss the world we live in today. Football has been and always will be my favorite sport.
